They settled further into their new trees, each day building new towers and avenues. Familiarity breeds affection, and it was their nature to love their home, so eventually they came to also to love their new trees as they had loved Daphne. The daily love of a thousand tiny and divine souls was enough to awaken the trees, though very slowly. The grogginess that a person feels when suddenly awakened to unknown surroundings lasted for long, dewey years in these trees. Slowly and with great surprise these trees awoke to the race that made a nest in their branches, and then more slowly they awoke to the love which made its home inside those nests. Even slower still, they came to realize that the root source of this love, a deep and powerful anchor in the center of the forest, was Daphne. And they could return her love. And so they do.
